Birthday cards should be special. But every time I go to look for one I become frustrated. I can never find that perfect card!
I prefer the card to relay a little humor, if at all possible, but the card manufactures, and I seem to differ on what humor is.
So many of their attempts at humor cause me to respond as my students in class responded to what I thought was outlandishly funny back in my teaching days.
If my memory serves me correctly, I believe their response was, “Sick!!’
That is often my response too as I search the rack of cards for that special card for that special person.
So, I have taken on the daunting task of writing my own cards designed to fit the birthday celebrator to a tee. And to make that task more challenging the cards must be in rhyme.
This is my second year of attempting the task and I fear at times I may have bitten off more than I can chew.
You see the grandkids are starting to leave the nest as they attend college or enter the work force and I am losing touch with what their life experiences are like.
Ammunition for funny, personal cards are drying up for me as I lose touch with their day- to- day experiences.
I think I may have to require each of them to send me a monthly report on something meaningful that happened to them that month. Then I will have some actual experiences that will help me spark a card idea with a personal, humorous touch to it.
At this time, I am required to produce fourteen rhyming cards sometime during the calendar year. However, as the grandkids mature significant others begin to join the group.
At this time, we have three significant others. When will they be eligible to receive rhyming, humorous birthday cards?
I believe the ‘m’ word will make them eligible, ‘m’ referring to marriage of course. 🙂
But we will cross that bridge once the vows are spoken. 🙂
Perhaps I should share an example of a rhyming birthday card so that you are able to understand the concept. I will share granddaughter Miah’s card.
This is especially funny since this is her second birthday card this month. In April there are four birthdays making it the busiest humorous, rhyming card writing month of the year.
Well, I wrote a card for Miah and sent it off in the mail. A week later I began writing a card for another granddaughter and as old age has been noted to cause memory failure, I mistakenly wrote Miah a second card. It was meant for granddaughter Caylin. 🙁
Actually Miah’s second card was much better than the first so I’ll share it with you. I could save it for next year but with my memory I would certainly lose track of it.
Miah’s Birthday Poem
Working at UPS is Miah’s favorite job,
If we shared her work hours, it would make us all sob! 🙁
Today is her birthday so UPS make her boxes small and light,
And in her college classes may she get all things right!
Once her homework is done, she can celebrate till dawn,
Then take a break and watch the sun rise as she sits upon the lawn.
But most importantly we must say,
Miah have a happy, happy birthday!
Sometimes the reader may fail to recognize the humor in the rhymes and to that I respond, “You had to be there!” 🙂
Brooke is our Easter granddaughter. Depending on the date of Easter we sometimes celebrate the Easter Bunny’s arrival at the same time.
This year her birthday will be Good Friday and I will share her rhyming, humorous card with you now. It is a special birthday as the card will reveal.
A Birthday Poem for Brooke
Brooke is turning twenty-one!
Now that sounds like lots of fun!
Let’s get the family together and share a drink,
If there are no olives or pickles that will really stink! 🙁
Gathering together we’ll share a cold brew,
Be quick or in a blink of an eye Brooke will turn twenty-two!
So, before that happens, we have to say,
Brooke have a happy, happy twenty-first birthday! 🙂
I hope you are getting the jest of the personalized rhyming birthday cards, humor questionable of course. 🙂
As we wrap things up, I think it only fitting that I share the card that confused me and caused me to write the second birthday card to Granddaughter Miah. It took two attempts, but I finally got it right.
Caylin’s Birthday Poem
There was a girl named Caylin,
Who was found on a park bench wailing!
When asked what was wrong, she replied,
When I learned my age, I almost died!
We assured her she was really not that old,
So do not worry about gray hair but live bold.
Prepare for many more birthdays to come your way,
Finally happy, happy birthday we must say! 🙂
So that’s an introduction to the addition to my new card writing career.
My children’s books have yet to reach the best seller’s list and I fear these birthday poems will meet the same fate. 🙁
Happy Easter to all! 🙂
Until next time. 🙂
